The Canadian regulatory environment with respect to Natural Health Products is in the process of changing to a model that is very different from the US model and presents unique challenges to US companies wishing to market their products in Canada.

There are currently two regulatory bodies affecting Natural Health Products in Canada.

• CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) oversees all food products and their labeling
• NHPD (Natural Health Products Directorate) will oversee all Natural Health Products and their labelling in a manner quite similar to OTC product in Canada.

As of December 31st, 2004 most Natural Health Products will require an NPN (Natural Product Number) prior to being allowed to market in Canada. If these products are manufactured outside of Canada they will also need to be imported and distributed by a licensed Canadian partner.
